  • Cardiology –Surgical Electrophysiology Team - Inpatient 

    Maine Medical Center (MMC), a Maine Health member, is recruiting for an experienced Physician Assistant (PA) or Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (ACNP) to work with the Cardiology Advanced Practice Provider Service, in providing procedural electrophysiology duties.   The Cardiology Advanced Practice Provider Service is an admitting service that provides cardiovascular and general medical care. This APP will work with the EP team, in conjunction with the general Cardiology Service.  Duties will predominantly be provided during daytime EP lab hours, and include, but will not be limited to, incisional closure, accessing arterial and venous lines, and intra-cardiac ultrasound.   Limited night, weekend, and holiday coverage will be required.

    MMC’s Division of Cardiology has been ranked High Performing by US News in several cardiac procedures and conditions, including Heart Bypass Surgery, Aortic Valve Surgery, and Heart Failure.  This is one of the largest programs in Northern New England with 50+ providers. 

    Schedule: Rotating shifts – this is a 24/7 in-patient service, averaging thirteen to fourteen 12-hour shifts per month (annual average 38 hours per week).  Night coverage currently averages one per month.  Weekend coverage currently averages 2.5 weekends per 16 week period.

Previous APP experience.  Maintenance of BLS and ACLS certifications.  Ability to effectively establish and maintain interpersonal relationships with physicians, nurses, allied health professionals, and administrative staff.  Ability to effectively establish and maintain interpersonal relationships with staff physicians, advanced practice professionals, nursing, allied health professionals, and other hospital staff.  Act as a multidisciplinary liaison in order to provide the best care possible to our patients and families. Ability to efficiently and accurately perform daily rounds/progress notes, admission histories/physicals, admission and daily orders, post procedure follow up and procedural notes, request for appropriate consultations, discharge after visit summaries/discharge summaries. Ability to perform routine technical skills including suturing, phlebotomy, and arterial puncture for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes.   Ability to surgically assist the Electrophysiology physicians in addition to the skill set above. Interested individuals will be taught to manipulate intra-cardiac ultrasound for trans-septal puncture and ablation procedures. Additional diagnostic catheter manipulation, under the supervision of the EP doctor, may also be taught and expected as the APP/EP lab role expands. Play a role in all aspects of care as the EP patient moves through the EP lab (pre-op, intra-op and post-op care), as outlined above. Compassionate and thorough care of patients and families.  

Qualifications: 

Certified by the National Commission on the Certification of Physician Assistants or certification by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners/American Nurses credentialing and maintenance of such certifications.  Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant Program or Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Program with Surgical Certification. Licensure through the Maine State Board of Registration in Medicine or Maine State Board of Nursing (or eligibility for licensure).
