Director (Medical Oncologist), Cancer Risk & Prevention Clinic

The Maine Medical Center Cancer Institute (MMCCI) is seeking a full-time medical oncologist to serve as Director of the Cancer Risk and Prevention Clinic (CRPC), which provides essential leadership and service throughout our rapidly evolving MaineHealth Cancer Care Network (MHCCN) and the State of Maine.  This physician leader must have demonstrable expertise in predictive and preventive oncology and especially cancer genetics risk assessment and counseling.  Additional expertise in molecular oncology is also highly desirable and would add enormous value to our organization. Contemporary comprehensive cancer programs are growing within the MHCCN with an expanding cancer risk program and a newly launched initiative focusing on precision medicine and specifically cancer genomics.  There may also be opportunities to participate in the evolving Maine Cancer Genomics Initiative (MCGI) led by the Jackson Laboratory in partnership with the Maine Medical Center Research Institute. Training and experience in health services research is desired, but not required.  Appointment on the faculty of Tufts University School of Medicine and participating in the Maine Track program are expected as well.

The MMC Cancer Risk and Prevention Clinic is an outpatient service that gives primary and specialty care physicians and patients access to state-of-the-art cancer risk assessment and prevention services, particularly for hereditary risk assessment and counseling. The clinic provides hereditary risk assessment and counseling for all types of adult-onset cancers including: colon, breast, ovarian, pancreas, kidney, prostate and skin as well as less common tumors and pediatric cancers. The clinic also supports several telemedicine clinics to expand services in the more rural areas within the MHCCN. Patients and families are referred to the clinic from throughout Maine and parts of New Hampshire.

The desired candidate will provide leadership and direction for our growing cancer risk assessment program, attend clinic 3-days per week, and staff telemedicine clinics. The program currently supports 24 full-time and one part-time cancer genetics counselors, with plans to add two more full-time counselors in the next year.  The candidate will apply skills to: promote cancer prevention and control by integrating assessment of cancer susceptibility and oncology knowledge into clinical practice; recommend risk-appropriate options for cancer surveillance and prevention as part of comprehensive cancer risk assessment, including imaging, chemoprevention and surgical interventions; understand the medical, legal, and psychosocial ramifications of hereditary cancer susceptibility counseling and testing; demonstrate familiarity with the roles and practical issues of clinical research that are related to Human Subjects Protections, Informed Consent, Institutional Review Board and HIPAA; provide resources and information on current hereditary cancer registries, cancer epidemiology, and cancer prevention studies to patients and professional colleagues; provide research training and support by participating in collaborative institutional and multi-institutional research activities; incorporate web-based resources into ongoing practice-based education, professional development, and research network support; support and promote primary and continuing medical education in predictive and preventive oncology at local and regional levels;  support and promote public education in predictive and preventive oncology at local and regional levels; and provide expertise in the evolving field of cancer genomics to support local and regional precision medicine initiatives.

Situated on the Maine coast, Portland offers the best of urban sophistication combined with small-town friendliness.  The area provides four season recreational opportunities, such as skiing, hiking, sailing, and miles of beautiful beaches.  Just two hours north of Boston, this is an exceptionally diverse and vibrant community.
